- Cellular jail stands as a symbol of extreme cruel persecution of freedom fighters of British India. Cellular Jail contains only solitary cells with no contact with other inmates.
- The Cellular Jail has 7 wings connected to a tower in the middle like a spokes of a wheel. Post-Independence four buildings were demolished. Presently there are only three out of the seven wings are intact and open for visitors.
- Later witness the Sound & Light (Son-et-Lumiere) Show recapitulating the viciousness meted to freedom fighters, who incarcerated in the Cellular Jail. The show lasts for 55 minutes duration and organized on daily basis in the premises of Cellular Jail. You can opt for either Hindi or English show.

Ross Island was once an administrative headquarters for the Britishers, before an earthquake rocked the Island in 1941. After this, Britishers took settlement in Port blair. Slowly but steadily the nature took its toll, as banyan trees engulfed the buildings thus replacing the manmade structures. The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India has issued a detailed Standard Operating Procedure dated December 22, 2020, for Surveillance and Response to the NEW VARIANT OF SARS-CoV-2 Virus detected in the UK. To effectively tackle the challenge arising from the new variant, the Andaman & Nicobar Administration has decided that
- All incoming passengers arriving at VSI (Veer Savarkar International Airport) from December 26, 2020, onwards, shall have to mandatorily carry RT-PCR Negative Test Report issued from an ICMR Recognized lab, subject to the condition that the RT-PCR test should have been taken within 48hours prior to the commencement of journey. (For e.g. if the tourist takes a flight from Chennai at 0600hrs on January 28, 2021, the sample for the RT-PCR test should have been taken not before 0600hrs. on January 26, 2021).
- All Airlines shall ensure strict compliance with the above instructions.
The union territory comprises roughly 572 islands at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Of which 37 Islands are inhabited. The territorial capital is Port Blair; other major towns are Diglipur, Mayabunder, Rangat, and Wandoor. It is around 1000 miles away from the Indian subcontinent down South-East.
Indian nationals need no Passport/ Visa / permit to visit the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. However, visiting tribal areas of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is prohibited.
All foreigners require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to stay in the Islands. The Permit is possible to obtain on arrival at Port Blair from the Immigration authorities for 30 days, extendable for another 15 days with permission. In addition, permit is also possible to obtain from Indian Mission Overseas, Foreigner’s Registration Offices at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and the Immigration authorities at the airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.
Places covered with the permit are – South Andaman Islands, Middle Andaman Islands and Little Andaman Islands (except Tribal Reserve), Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island), Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Isand), Long Island, Diglipur, Baratang Island, North Passage Island and Island in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Part (excluding Boat, Hobday, Twin, Tarmugli, Malay and Pluto Islands).
Citizens of Afganistan, China and Pakistan and foreign nationals of Pakistani origin are required to obtain prior approval of Ministry of Home Affairs to visit Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands enjoy typical tropical climate all through the year. With an average temperature of around 23°C (minimum) and not exceeding 35°C (maximum), Andaman Islands are hot and humid generally.
The ideal season to visit Andaman and Nicobar Islands in summer stretches from January to May.
The Islands experience monsoon twice a year- mid May to September and November to January.
You can travel to Andaman and Nicobar Island by a Flight from Chennai, New Delhi and Kolkatta or by a Ferry from Chennai, Vishakapatnam or Kolkata.
A flight from Chennai and Kolkata takes about 02:00hrs, while the Flight from Delhi takes about 05:00hrs. There are three to four sailings every month from Chennai and Kolkata to Port Blair and vice-versa. There is only one sailing from / to Visakhapatnam in a month. The voyage takes about 50 to 60 hours during fair weather.
Port Blair has a number of ATM’s, and of late Havelock Island has two ATM’s. However, given the fact that there is no actual bank on Havelock, there are times when all the cash in the machine depleted. The ATM’s in Havelock are replenished with funds once every 3 or 4 days.
Untouched and endangered tribes do exist in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and add to their exotic nature. For thousands of years, these islands were home to hunter–gatherer groups, notably the Jarawa, the Onge, the Great Andamanese and the Sentinelese in the Andaman archipelago and the Nicobarese and the Shompen in the Nicobar archipelago.
